Grief is overwhelming and can bring you to your knees – usually when you are least expecting it. You need to be consistently reminding yourself that you can get through this.
The first thing is to just focus on one day at a time. Don’t worry about the big picture, the issues you can’t control, future life of children or grandchildren, chores you don’t know how to do and what bad things are going to happen next.
It’s the biggest of all self-abuse to live with anxiety about things that have yet to be. To counteract this bad habit say to yourself, “Small steps, one at a time I can manage the immediate”. If you waste your energy worrying about the future you will ignore the immediate and it’s only the present you have any control over.
Look around and find small tasks that you can accomplish and that you like doing. Once you accomplish them, stop and congratulate yourself on a job well done.
Grief is a journey one step at a time to either healing or depression – be watchful and don’t give up.
