I received this email yesterday from Rachel Stephenson with her youtube link. Her message is powerful and I just had to pass it on. Rachel talks about how complicated grief is and I love her message that “It is okay to be in pain”.
Thank you Rachel for sending this to me. Mary Francis
I recently gave a TEDxCUNY talk, “Against Grieving in Silence,” in New York City, which has been officially released and can be viewed at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zIFGl5tPQQ.
The subject of the talk is grief – in particular, the danger of grieving in silence and the importance of talking openly about loss. My hope is that this talk is the beginning of an extended conversation I can have with others about this subject through writing and public speaking. I lost my mother when I was five, and my talk explores the aftermath of her sudden death, and how my father and I grieved her loss very differently.
I am working strategically to extend my reach. Given the compelling mission of your work, I thought that you might have ideas about how I can share this talk with people who need to hear it or people who work in grief counseling, grief education, social work, etc., and could use the talk as a conversation starter or educational tool. The more people who see it (and share it), the better positioned I'll be to facilitate important conversations about loss.
