Travelling as a Widow – Nackawic

Home of the World's Largest Axe

I’m travelling on the road alot these days and sometimes I drive by a tourist area because I’m on a mission to get where I’m going.  But this one hot July day I saw the road sign that said “Nackawic – Home of the World’s Largest Axe” and decided to check it out.

I bought myself a large ice cream and just took my time walking around the park.  As I sat on the bench and looked out over the river I could feel myself slowing down and relaxing.  Here I am by myself – what’s the big hurry?  As widows we can still travel and see our local sights.  People come from all over to see what we take for granted.

This summer get out and sight see even if you have to do it by yourself.  There is so much to be thankful for and appreciate but I’m often too busy and I take things for granted or miss out because it’s not the same by myself.  Well get over it!!  That is the way it is and it’s a poor excuse for staying in on a beautiful summer day.

I enjoyed my ice cream and my visit.  My destination will still be there when I arrive so I’m going to be taking more of these little off the road adventures and it will do me good.

I wish I could travel but live on limited income. My husband passed away suddenly and did not have much life insurance. I am learning to live on one income and my car is not that dependentable to travel very far. If I get to work and back, I am lucky. So I sit home on the weekends until time to go back to work.

Hi Diane – I hope that your community has some social events that you can join with others and maybe car pool to. Also, I love taking the bus in the winter and not worrying about warming up the car or cleaning the snow of it (I’m in Canada) so that may be an option for you. Either way life is all around us if we just get out. Sometimes walking around your neighborhood helps. Take care, Mary Francis
