Widow fog is real and all the paperwork and more weighs us down. Everyone may have an opinion on what you should do, but not everyone is an expert or should be listened to. Below is a short list of some experts that can help us with paperwork needed to be done.
- Banks often have free Financial Planners.
- Insurance Agents can review your needs.
- Lawyers for redoing your Will/Living Trust.
- Preplanning at your local Funeral Home.
You have to get all your paperwork together because ignorance is not bliss when it comes to your money. Know what money is coming in and what is going out every month. Identify what expenses you have that are no longer necessary and get rid of them.
Living well does not require a lot of money beyond the basics of shelter, food, health care. Also, living within your means doesn’t mean living a sparse, cold life. The key is to stop and ask yourself what truly matters and focus on that.
Insurance may be the last thing on your mind, but you need to review your coverage. Many widows find themselves in difficult situations because their husbands had low to no life insurance.
Health insurance may be lost if it was covered under their husband’s employee health insurance program. Insurance going forward depends a lot on whether the widow still has children at home.
Widow fog – Widows often seem to be slower to respond to simple questions and tasks. Imagine that your brain is only functioning at a portion of what it normally does, effecting your capacity to think, feel and participate in life. Please understand that this is normal as your entire mental energy is focused on your loss. Financials, insurances, paperwork and more can be complicated. You may have options, but they don’t always show themselves – you have to look over everything with an expert.
I know you are tired of all the paper work that had to be done when your husband died. But, moving forward the paper work is for your quality of life. Not all policies are equal or even necessary if you no longer have dependent children or if your age makes premiums unrealistic.
