Death results in fears of all kinds. Some fears you didn’t know you would ever feel. Some are old fears you’ve had most of your life but had been successfully denying up to now.
A little fear can be motivating, but too many fears makes it difficult to function and to get on with your life. The first helpful thing to do is to identify your fears, take a look at them, and face them. Until you face your fears, what you are afraid of will most likely happen to you. So, as you become aware of your fears, it’s best not to deny them, but to face them openly.
You may be fearful of having to make all the decisions when you are overwhelmed emotionally. Also, as a single mother you may be barely functioning on your own and don’t have the patience, courage and strength to meet the needs of your children. It’s hard when you no longer have a partner to take over when you get overwhelmed.
As a widow one of our biggest fears is fear of the unknown future we face.
We need to learn that we can face the ghosts of the unknown future, and live one day at a time. We can learn to trust the grief process and know that we will be able to eventually face every new experience that occurs.
